WSP Kiribati welcomes a visiting researcher from the Netherlands!
We recently welcomed a visiting researcher from the Netherlands, Lara, who traveled to Kiribati to collect data on the first-ever national mass drug administration (MDA) for scabies and trachoma.
Lara interviewed MDA implementation workers—including nurses, supervisors, and volunteers—to gain insights into their experiences working on an integrated public health program.
This invaluable information from Kiribati’s world-first integrated MDA can help inform future programs globally.

Post-MDA prevalence survey underway in Solomon Islands
Recently, WSP Solomon Islands trained nurses and data officers for the second post-MDA national scabies prevalence survey.The training was held at the WSP office in Honiara and included a visit to a nearby village for a mock survey, where the teams put their training to the test.The survey has since been conducted in Honiara City Council and the following provinces: Guadalcanal, Central, Isabel, Temotu, and Western. Surveys in the remaining provinces are currently underway.Once the survey is complete, we will be able to determine the national prevalence of scabies and bacterial skin infections in Solomon Islands, following two MDAs conducted in collaboration with WSP and Solomon Islands Ministry of Health and Medical Services.Tianku tumas to all the survey teams for their hard work during this effort, and to the people of Solomon Islands for warmly welcoming the teams into their communities to carry out this important work. -
Kiribati milestone by launching the first-ever national integrated MDA to address Scabies and Trachoma
Kiribati has reached a huge milestone this week by launching the first-ever national integrated Mass Drug Administration (MDA) program to address both scabies and trachoma—two preventable and treatable diseases that affect communities throughout the country.
This is a very exciting partnership between the Ministry Of Health & Medical Services-Kiribati, the World Scabies Program, and The Fred Hollows Foundation. We are also proud to be supported by Global institute for disease elimination (GLIDE), and Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's.
By participating in this historic integrated MDA campaign, we are protecting families, preventing disease, and securing a healthier future for Kiribati. Let’s unite under the banner #United for Health: Kiribati Free of Scabies and Trachoma! -
Health systems strengthening in Levuka, Fiji
In March, the WSP Fiji team travelled to Levuka, in the Eastern Division, to deliver training to CHWs on scabies transmission and treatment. Due to a shortage of CHWs in Levuka, the team also trained interested community members! The participants can then share the knowledge with their communities, using the scabies flipchart provided to them in the training. -

Solomon Islands Ministry of Health and Medical Services NTD Unit Corporate Planning Workshop 2025
Last week, WSP participated in a workshop hosted by Solomon Islands Ministry of Health and Medical Services to help finalise the corporate plan for their new Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) Unit. Alongside partner organisations the Kirby Institute, The Fred Hollows Foundation, World Health Organization Solomon Islands, and Australian High Commission Solomon Islands, WSP joined the NTD Unit team and Ministry of Health and Medical Services representatives for the two-day meeting.The NTD Unit will focus on four priority diseases affecting Solomon Islanders: scabies, yaws, trachoma, and soil-transmitted helminths (STH).We’re proud to support the development of this vital Unit within Solomon Islands Ministry of Health and Medical Services, and extend our heartfelt congratulations to the NTD Unit team for their tremendous effort! -
World NTD Day 2025 from WSP Kiribati
Happy World NTD Day from the World Scabies Program Kiribati!WSP have started a new country program here in Kiribati, and we would like to introduce our two in-country coordinators – Mere and Miiri!Kiribati is a Pacific Island country in Micronesia that has experienced a high scabies prevalence.To tackle this neglected tropical disease in 2025, WSP Kiribati is implementing the first ever mass drug administration for scabies for the whole country.This year we will work to Unite, Act, and Eliminate scabies in Kiribati!
